Alcan Airex AG, part of Alcan Engineered Products - a business unit of Rio Tinto Alcan - has reached agreement with Armacell GmbH about a license for foamable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) technologies. With the license agreement signed, both parties have agreed to withdraw all pending lawsuits between them as well as all patent infringement proceedings. As part of this agreement, Armacell officially recognises the validity of the patents for foamable PET technologies owned by Alcan Airex AG. Alcan Airex AG grants a worldwide, non-exclusive and non-gratuitous license for the production and distribution of products using the patents for applications outside of packaging applications to Armacell and its subsidiaries. According to senior authority in Armacell, the technologies owned by Alcan Airex AG are both most cost effective and high performing solutions for producing PET foams for industrial and other applications. Armacell is a global leader in engineered foams insulation, specialty foam, and rubber solutions for a wide range of industries.
In 2005, Alcan Composites launched the first PET-based foam core material - AIREX® T 90. In July 2007, On July 2007, Alcan Airex AG acquired the patents and know-how for foamable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) technology from Italy-based Mossi & Ghisolfi Group to secure the global availability of PET-based foam core materials for the growing composites, packaging and industrial markets. In 2007, Armacell launched Armaform PET - a PET-based core material based on Alcan Composites patented foaming and welding technologies. In February 2008, both parties agree on a license agreement. Armacell officially recognises the validity of the patents for foamable PET technologies owned by Alcan Airex AG.
