A benzene leak occurred at Total's site in Carling, in the Moselle region of France. Epsol, an association that measures air quality in the region, reported that a peak of 1,100 micrograms of benzene had been detected per cubic metre of air around the site, when the recommended level is 10 micrograms per cubic metre.
Total Petrochemicals is a division of French oil group Total. Benzene is an inflammable toxic solvent and is classed as carcinogenic by the European Union.
