BMC to pay for plastic bags: an Effective Waste Management Program?

18-Jan-06
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to pay for used plastic bags, instead of banning them. This decision seems to have stemmed from the realization that implementation of an announced ban is not as simple. Though bags under 20 microns are banned, they continue to be used. It is important to deal with the nuisance of strewn plastic bags. This was discussed in a meeting at Mantralaya with the state environment secretary and senior civic officials on Monday. The Ranganathan Committee recommended that the state ban plastic bags below 100 microns, but only plastic bags below 40 microns would be banned. BMC plans to set up centers in each ward to collect the bags. However, the amount to be paid per kilogram has not been finalized yet.
