Borouge, the Abu Dhabi-based provider of plastics solutions, has signed the Responsible Care Global Charter at the inaugural Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) forum in Dubai. The signing took place with Borealis - one of Europe's largest polyolefin producers and a joint venture partner in Borouge along with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc). It is the first time two leading companies in the Middle East and Europe have partnered to advance responsible care in their respective markets.
The Responsible Care Global Charter is a voluntary initiative that sets an internationally agreed framework to continuously improve the health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance and products stewardship of chemical producers and to advance sustainable development. The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) launched the initiative in January 2006. The principles and commitments of the charter that companies must follow are:
* To continuously improve the HSE knowledge and performance of technologies, processes and products over their life cycles so as to avoid harm to people and the environment.
* To use resources efficiently and minimise waste.
* To report openly on performance, achievements and shortcomings.
* To listen, engage and work with people to understand and address their concerns and expectations.
* To cooperate with governments and organisations in the development and implementation of effective regulations and standards, and to meet or go beyond them.
* To provide help and advice to foster the responsible management of chemicals by all those who manage and use them along the product chain.
