New single layer plastic bottles, meeting demands for environment friendly quality products, using Xamos, a new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based have been introduced by Amcor.
Xamos achieves an extremely high opacity at a low thickness, providing greater protection from light damage, the company claims. This allows the bottles to deliver a four-month minimum shelf life for UHT milk.
Despite being made of a single layer of plastic, the new Xamos bottles offer all the traditional consumer benefits of PET packaging. The product is lightweight, easy to handle and convenient. The injected finish and precise dimensions result in a tight fitting cap, eliminating the need for an aluminium seal.
Recycling of this bottle becomes easier, at a time when global beverage consumption has risen 100% between 1997 and 2005, reaching US$10 bln in the US alone. USA sends 2 mln tpa of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottled water packaging to landfill. As against this figure, recycling rate for PET in 2005 was only 23.1% in the US, far below the 39.7% achieved a decade earlier. Across Europe, the PET recycling rate averages between 20-40%
