Environmentalists censure Formosa report on 6th Naphtha Cracking Plant

26-Dec-12
Environmentalists criticized a Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) report assessing health risks and water usage at the Sixth Naphtha Cracking Plant, as per ChinaPost.com.tw. The Sixth Naphtha Cracking Plant is located at an industrial area located in Mailiao Township, Yunlin County. Questions have been raised about potential environmental and health impacts in the areas surrounding the plant. Representatives from FPG said around 169 chemicals are used in the plant, of these 18 are carcinogenic. However, environmentalists said that according to health risk regulations, toxins and air pollution should be included in any evaluation, which they said the FPG report failed to account for. An EIA committee member said that according to the FPG report there was no evidence of a build-up of carcinogens in the area, which they suggested was evidence the evaluation was insufficient.
