Equistar Chemicals pulls second olefins unit off steam due to market downturn

19-Dec-08
Equistar Chemicals, LP, an indirect subsidiary of LyondellBasell Industries AF S.C.A. will temporarily idle its olefins unit at Chocolate Bayou, Texas, citing declining market and economic conditions as reasons. The Chocolate Bayou plant has a nameplate capacity of 1.2 bln pounds per year of ethylene and 725 mln pounds of propylene. The olefins unit at the plant is expected to remain out of service until sufficient demand for petrochemical derivatives resumes. Earlier in October, Equistar provisionally pulled an olefins unit at La Porte, Texas off steam and the facilities are undergoing maintenance work to prepare for a restart as the market demand improves, the company said. LyondellBasell, through its global subsidiaries, has 11 olefins plants worldwide and a rated annual capacity of 14.9 bln pounds of ethylene and 8.7 bln pounds of propylene.
