Deteriorating demand amid global economic meltdown has led to idling of olefins unit by Equistar Chemicals at Chocolate Bayou, Texas until demand builds up. The olefin unit has a nameplate capacity of 1.2 bln pounds pa of ethylene and 725 mln pounds pa of propylene. Equistar Chemicals is an indirect subsidiary of LyondellBasell Industries. LyondellBasell affiliates have recently idled several chemical and polymers plants around the world to optimize operations due to low demand.
The facilities are being maintained in a state of readiness to restart as market conditions improve.
