A blast occurred over the weekend at a workshop at the No. 101 benzene plant owned by the Jilin Petrochemical Company. A string of blasts that followed have ripped through a chemical plant. One death has been reported and five people are still missing, following Sunday afternoon's explosions. About 70 others have been injured and 40 of them are in hospital. The fire has been extinguished and local authorities have evacuated more than 10,000 nearby residents.
As per the reports, a buildup of liquid in one of the facility's towers led to the explosions. All pipelines connected to the tower were cut, to stop the feed of the highly flammable benzene.
