Gulf region to produce 20% of world's ethylene by 2010

04-Oct-06
As Gulf Arab countries expand petrochemical output capacity, they will account for 30 million ton - (20%) of the world's ethylene production by 2010 from the current 8%. 50% of ethylene projects under construction are in this area. The major plants coming up in this region are a US$800 million ethylene cracker in Qatar and acquisition of UK division of Huntsman Corp. by Saudi Arabian Basic Industries. Some of the challenges to be faced by the region will include rising feedstock prices, diminishing availability of some feedstock such as methane and ethane.
