In view of its long-term visions to advance into the value-added plastic business,Honam Petrochemical Corp. (a unit of South Korea's retail giant Lotte Group), has signed a contract with a Japanese firm to adopt its technology for producing, polycarbonate, with safer materials. The technology from Asahi Kasei Chemicals Corp. uses a carbonic acid gas that is safer and environmentally friendly, allowing lower construction and production costs. The conventional method for the production of polycarbonate is based on phosgene, a poisonous gas used to manufacture pesticides and dyes.
At an investment of 200 million won (US$189,000), Honam is to set up the production facility with capacity of 65,000 tpa of polycarbonates by Oct. 2008.
