Improved polyolefin/metal bonding for high performance hybrids

21-Sep-09
Plastic/metal hybrids components are more and more used by the automotive industry. It is the reason why the German firm Henkel AG & Co. KGaA has developed a new adhesive allowing to bond polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylenes like HDPE, LDPE to each other as well as to metals without the need for costly, time-consuming surface treatment. This new patented product, available under the trade name Loctite 3038, is a solvent-free, non-flammable polyolefin adhesive that does not contain any methyl methacrylate. It can be applied with both manual and fully automated dispensing systems. It provides very high strength together with good toughness and can be used to bond plastic covers, housing and air ducts. It also suits for assembling cataphoretically coated metal/polyolefin constructions for the car body such as hybrid front end modules
