Poor financial results have impelled Lyondell Chemical Company to indefinitely suspend production at its 300 million pound pa. toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Toluene diisocyanate is used in the production of polyurethanes for flexible foam applications, including consumer goods, transportation and packaging. TDI also is used in the manufacture of coatings, sealants, adhesives and elastomers.
Economic recovery has failed to have the desired positive impact of the TDI business in North America. Poor financial results are not expected to change in the near term, making it commercially impracticable to continue production of TDI at the Lake Charles plant. Lyondell acquired the TDI plant as part of its 1998 acquisition of ARCO
Chemical Company. ARCO Chemical had purchased the plant from Olin Corporation in December 1996
