MANN+HUMMEL (Germany), a leading original equipment supplier to the automotive industry, recently won an award for innovative application of plastics by VDI Werkstofftechnik (Materials Engineering division of The Association of German Engineers). This award acknowledges the first successful manufacture of an air filter system made from bio-polyamide ready for serial production. The air cleaner here is supplied by MANN+HUMMEL and the polyamide used for the filter was supplied by BASF. BASF's eco-friendly plastic -- bio-polyamide -- consists of approximately 60% sebacine acid which is obtained from castor oil.
Bio-polyamides clearly offer additional advantages including lighter-weight components, far lower water absorption and a favourable environmental impact. Dr. Holger Findeisen, Head of Products, Processes and Materials Competence Centre commented: "This module suitable for serial production highlights the great potential of bio-plastics. A further step has thus been taken for its use in the engine compartment and for other automotive applications."
