China's top coal producer Inner Mongolia Yitai Coal Co Ltd has received the green light for a 29.1 bln yuan (US$4.2 bln) coal-to-liquids (CTL) project in Inner Mongolia, a major coal producing region. Upon completion, the project will have capacity to produce 2.15 mln tons of diesel, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas, as well as 157,700 tons of other chemical products.
The company's subsidiary, Inner Mongolia Yitai CTO Co Ltd, is set to invest 8.72 bln yuan in the new project with the rest coming from bank loans. China, the world's biggest energy consumer, has made largely untested coal-to-gas technology a key part of its strategy to boost the use of cleaner fuels as it battles pollution in its major cities.
