Navi Mumbai SEZ promoted by Mukesh Ambani gets formal clearance

13-Jul-07
The Centre has given formal clearance for 21 new special economic zones, including the multiproduct Navi Mumbai SEZ promoted by Mukesh Ambani of Reliance. It also gave in-principle approval for six SEZs, including two in West Bengal. 5 SEZs will come up in Maharashtra, 3 each in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh; 2 each in Gujarat and Punjab, and one SEZ each in Orissa and Haryana. The first SEZ for the northeast, a 400-hecatre multiproduct zone in Nagaland - was also cleared. 14 of the SEZs cleared were for information technology, IT-enabled services and electronic hardware. Two were multiproduct SEZs and one each was for engineering, biotechnology, aluminium, petrochemicals and leather. The BoA asked the promoters of the Navi Mumbai SEZ, spread over 1,250 hectares, to build the infrastructure within a year, ensuring contiguity of the allotted land. Earlier, clearance was denied for the SEZ on the issues of contiguity and rights of villages in its vicinity.
