Capstone, a new kind of implant is helping to heal the spine!
Capstone is made from a biocompatible Peek, which means it is body-friendly. It fits into the disk space to keep collapsed bones separated while new bone grows. The likely advantages of Capstone are:
· Unlike metal implants, capstone is invisible on an X-ray and does not hide the bone formation like metal, helping to judge whether or not a fusion has occurred.
· It is also regarded to have a benefit over implants made of bone because bony implants may at times look like healing bones leading to a conclusion that they are healed before they really are.
Dr. Kevin Foley, a neurosurgeon at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, is regarded to have played a role in designing this implant.
