Gas prices climbed as oil prices fell after a volatile session. Light, sweet crude for October delivery on the NYMEX settled at US$63.11 a barrel. October Brent crude oil futures fell to US$61.61 a barrel on London's IPE. Gasoline futures rose amid expectations that Wednesday's weekly snapshot of U.S. inventory data will show gasoline supplies at near critical levels, mainly attributed to a shortage of production in the Gulf Coast caused by Hurricane Katrina Gasoline futures rose to US$1.8916 a gallon while heating oil gained about 3 cents to US$1.8402 a gallon.
Concerns are being voiced about the availability of natural gas supplies as USA heads into the cooler months of the year as region affected by Katrina are not expected to recover production for months.
