Oman's Octal initiate operations at Salalah-based 300,000 mtpa PET plant

Octal Petrochemicals, Oman based petrochem maker announced that it has initiated operations at its second PET plant (300,000 mtpa capacity) in the southeast port city of Salalah. The new plant is the largest PET resin plant of its type in the Middle East and the largest clear rigid PET sheet plant in the world. According to reports, Octal will initially eye US, Europe and China's food and consumer packaging markets in 2009. The US$350 mln integrated PET resin and clear rigid sheet production plant houses a new technology which includes enhanced gauge control leading to cost savings by achieving higher yields and meets strict eco standards as the plant uses recycled municipal wastewater and produce 100% recyclable PET. According to the company, phase 2 of expansion will be realized in early 2011, augmenting PET resin capacity another 500,000 metric tons.
