Owens Corning licenses award-winning reinforcement technology to make co-mingled glass and thermoplastic fibers

10-Jul-09
Owens Corning, a world leader in glass fiber reinforcements and residential and commercial building materials, announced that it has licensed its award-winning Twintex® reinforcement technology to Fiber Glass Industries, Inc. (Netherlands). Twintex® technology will be used by Fiber Glass Industries to produce GLASS POLYPRO™ roving and fabrics that combine glass fibers and polypropylene filaments. The proprietary and ready-to-use thermoplastic and glass fiber technology is designed to produce reinforcements with high mechanical properties such as excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio and superior impact resistance. Twintex® technology also provides freedom of design and easily recyclable products. As a result, Fiber Glass Industries will manufacture co-mingled glass fiber and thermoplastic resin reinforcement which it says provides high mechanical properties with no volatile organic compounds. Earlier this year, an application of Twintex® technology received one of the composites industry's highest awards. The honor, awarded at the JEC Composites Show in Paris, the world's largest exhibition for composites materials, was for the products and technology used to make window lineals. The breakthrough technology, using Twintex® co-mingled glass fiber and polymer reinforcements, eliminated the need for steel inserts to strengthen the parts, which allowed the manufacturer to eliminate a separate insertion step from the process.
