Taking a vital step towards sustainability, ConAgra Foods - one of North America's leading packaged food companies has decided to use the post-consumer recycled plastic in its frozen meal trays for its product. ConAgra Foods has joined hands with Associated Packaging Technologies to utilize a new technology that cleans recycled plastic for use as a component in frozen meal trays thereby diverting approximately 8 mln pounds of plastic from landfills to the recycling stream annually.
Approved by the FDA, the new trays made from post-consumer recycled plastics will eliminate about 8 mln pounds of plastic from going to landfills. In addition, the decision will save 236 mln BTUs of energy (enough energy to run 2,593 average American homes for one year) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15,200 tons of CO2 per year (same as taking nearly 2,000 cars off the road each year).
