The occurrence of cancer in the Rayong region has put on hold the planned power and petrochemical plants. The plants, planned for Map Ta Phut in Rayong, will be delayed until the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry finds academic research to pinpoint which toxic substances in the area are causing cancers. The research, that will show which substances are causing cancer, the degree of seriousness and which kind of industrial plants could emit those toxic materials, is estimated to should be available in a month or two. The research would enable setting necessary appropriate environmental standards. All proposed petrochemical plants and power plants would be delayed until the new standards are enforced.
