Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) is planning a polypropylene (PP) project, with a capacity of 150,000 tons, at an investment outlay of Rs 1,200 crore. News suggests that Engineers India has submitted a feasibility report on the project, which. would take about four to five years to be commissioned. In 2000, CPCL embarked upon an expansion program to add 3 million tons to its 6.5 million tons refinery in North Chennai. The LPG output of the 9.5 million tons refinery would be used in the polypropylene project.
Though the planned size of 150,000 tons is less than the international economic size for a polypropylene plant, CPCL believes the planned size is viable given the projected demand in India.
