Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) is in the process of shortlisting prequalifying bidders for its 250,000 tpa low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plant, known as LDPE-3. Plant capacity will be scalable upto 300,000 tpa. The firms are competing for the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract on the plant, for which tender documents are due to be issued later this month. Basell, of the Netherlands, is supplying the technology. The prequalification bids from the prospective EPC contractors shortlisted by Basell are under evaluation. Tender documents are expected to be issued to the qualified bidders in June. The total cost of the project along with the central control room is around US$410 mln. Front-end engineering design is being carried out by Germany's Uhde. Qapco plans to approach banks for project finance by year end for the plant scheduled to get commissioned by end 2011.
