Driven by robust global demand, Japanese ethylene production rose 1.7% in March 2010 vs March 2009 despite a heavier schedule of maintenance shutdowns. Ethylene output totalled 513,400 tons in March 2010 vs 504,900 tons in March 2009 according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. However output in this month was down 13.5% from 593,100 tons in February. Three plants were shut for maintenance in March 2010, compared with none a year ago and one in February.The export volume of ethylene fell 8.7% to 212,100 tons in February from a year earlier, as well as from January export levels of 236,400 tons.
