Rising polymer prices fail to dampen demand in Thailand

12-Mar-12
Players in Thailand report that domestic polymer demand has remained firm over the past few weeks even as demand from other nearby countries has stagnated in the face of the ongoing economic woes besetting the global economy, as per ChemOrbis. Reconstruction efforts following last year’s devastating floods have helped to keep demand firm as has the fact that many buyers are working to restore stocks lost or damaged during the floods. Distributors in Thailand report that demand remained healthy over the past week even though domestic producers announced a round of price increases to keep pace with stronger upstream costs and firming global polymer trends. “Domestic prices for both homo-PP and copolymer PP firmed up last week, but this has not affected demand for our end products, which remains healthy,” commented a converter manufacturing household goods. Another converter in the household products sector stated, “Demand for our end products is doing well these days and has not been dampened by rising polymer prices.” “We are seeing good demand for our end products in spite of higher raw material prices and are currently running our plant at normal rates,” stated a converter manufacturing bottle caps. “We are hesitant about purchasing at the current levels as we think that prices have risen too quickly recently, although there has been no real reduction in our end product demand following the upward movement in raw material prices,” a woven bag manufacturer told ChemOrbis. “Local prices for PP, PE and PS have all moved higher but we are not experiencing any difficulties concluding deals these days,” stated a distributor. “Polymer demand is strong after last year’s floods and local availability is tight,” the distributor added. “We are seeing healthy demand from the local market even after lifting our prices last week,” another distributor reported. “We are feeling confident about the demand outlook and believe that our sales will remain strong for the remainder of this month.” A source at a Thai PVC producer said, “We are seeing good demand from the local market even after we raised our March prices. We have reduced our export allocations for this month owing to strong demand from the local market.”
