SABIC affiliate, Eastern Petrochemical Company (SHARQ), has planned expansion projects to add 2.8m metric tpa to SABIC's production and further enhance SHARQ's position as the world's largest single producer of Ethylene Glycol. SHARQ has signed letters of intent (LOI) to award the following contracts to:
* UK based Stone & Webster Ltd. to construct an Olefins Plant with a production capacity of 1,300,000 tpa of ethylene
* South Korean Samsung Engineering Company Ltd. to construct its 700,000 tpa Ethylene Glycol Plant.
* German company Linde, to construct its Linear Low and High Density Polyethylene (LLDPE and HDPE) plants with a production capacity of 800,000 tpa, which will increase polyolefins production at SHARQ to reach more than 1,600,000 tpa.
The agreements will cover engineering, procurement and construction of the plants at the SHARQ affiliate in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia, estimated to be complete by Q1-2008. This expansion will also enhance SABIC's global ranking, expected to become number one once this project comes on stream. SABIC is the world's 3rd largest producer of polyethylene and number 4 for polyolefins.
