Shaw Stone & Webster awarded US$50 Mn Sulfone Unit by Solvay Advanced Polymers

15-Apr-05
U.S.based Solvay Advanced Polymers has shortlisted Shaw Stone & Webster the contract for the front end engineering design contract for a new, world-scale sulfone polymers production unit. Shaw's engineering contract includes process studies basic engineering design cost estimating, modular construction analysis and master project scheduling. The new unit is expected to be commissioned in 2006. The location of the new facility will be announced after the basic engineering design is completed. The estimated cost of the planned production unit is over US$50 million, and, at full capacity will nearly triple Solvay Advanced Polymers' existing polyethersulfone (PES) production capacity. The new unit will produce the entire range of RADEL® products, which include RADEL® A polyethersulfone and RADEL® R polyphenylsulfone. The exceptional properties of these products include chemical and heat resistance, toughness, transparency and dimensional stability. Due to these inherent properties, these sulfone polymers find usage in demanding applications in the aerospace, automotive, electronic, electrical and consumer goods sectors. The new plant will provide a greater opportunity to explore and develop new markets and applications in the future. On completion, the new unit will position Solvay Advanced Polymers to support growing global markets.
