Shell Chemicals has declared force majeure on ethylene from its cracker located at Moerdijk, The Netherlands, on 11 December 2006. The 900,000 tpa facility had to be shut down on 7 December following a lightning strike. While the cracker is now back up, it is operating at reduced capacity, it is not yet clear when force majeure can be lifted.
