Sinopec has commenced work on an 80,000 tpa ethylene plant in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province. The plant, to be built at an investment outlay of 14.6 bln yuan will meet growing demand in the central region of the country. The plant will be the first large-scale refining and chemical production base in Central China and is expected to be ready by 2010. An investment of 400 mln yuan has been made in pollution-control equipment for the new plant after it was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in April.
Sinopec plans to build 3 million tons of annual ethylene capacity in the Yangtze River Delta in the east, Bohai Bay in the north and the Pearl River region in the south by 2010, producing over 60% of the nation's ethylene.
