Sumitomo Chemical Co. is to spend about Y20 billion to boost production capacity for methyl methacrylate, or MMA. The rising demand in Asia for IT products such as LCD light-guide sheets, have led to a rise in demand for MMA monomer and polymer- leading to construction of new production lines in Singapore.
Sumitomo's new MMA monomer plant in Singapore will have an annual capacity of 90,000 metric tons, while its new MMA polymer plant will have a capacity of 50,000 tons. The new facilities are estimated to commence commercial production in the first quarter of 2008. Its combined production capacity of MMA monomer in Asia is likely to increase to about 413,000 tons, while its production capacity for MMA polymer is to rise to about 244,000 tons.
