Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical Corp. may have to delay start-up of a 1.2 million tpa ethylene plant until mid-2007 due to delays over talks concerning a shortage of building materials. A shortage of labour and materials had slowed construction of the plant, located at its Mailiao petrochemical complex in southern Taiwan, pushing back completion from an original goal of October this year to the first quarter.
This delay in start up from the first quarter could be a major setback to Asian naphtha traders counting on the plant to provide a boost to regional demand. Though the regional naphtha market has factored in the delay, the rescheduling could affect the petrochemical feedstock market.
