Qapco, the joint-venture between Industries Qatar and Total Petrochemicals, reached an important milestone in its announced project for the construction of a third low density polyethylene line in its facility of Messaied in the South-East of Qatar. The plant will use Basell technology for which the license agreement was signed last week in Doha.
The new LDPE line, scheduled for completion by end 2010, will have an initial capacity of 250 kt per year with the possibility to be extended to 300 kt. This additional capacity will bring the total capacity of the site to 650-700 kt per year, making it one of the biggest single LDPE production sites in the world.
The ethylene for this third LDPE line will be supplied from the ongoing expansion of the Qapco Ethane Cracker and from the excess ethylene of Qatofin's share of the Ras Laffan cracker, scheduled for completion late 2008.
Total Petrochemicals has been present in Qatar since 1974 through its participation in Qapco. It is also a partner with Qapco in the Qatofin project, currently constructing a 450 kt/y linear low density (LLDPE) polyethylene plant in the South and, together with Q-chem, the world's largest ethane cracker (with a capacity of 1,3 million t/y) in the North.
