The French firm Total plans to open a research centre at the Qatar Science and Technology Park shortly. This announcement was concurrent with the formal opening of the Qatar Petrochemical Company's (QPCO) Ethylene Expansion Project (EP2). Total is also supporting another initiative to bring to Doha HSE. HSE was ranked recently by the Financial Times as the best business school in Europe. These ventures are joint initiatives between Total, HSE and the French Institute for Petroleum (IFP).
Total has been involved in several projects in Qatar for many years, some of which have been completed or under development. Total is one of the founding partners of Qatargas and also of the Dolphin project which went on stream recently. Besides, Total has been operating Al Khaleej oilfield for the last 10 years. Total is partner in Qatar's mega petrochemical projects such as Qapco's EP 2 expansion project, Qapco LDPE 3 project which is slated to come on stream in 2011 and the large ethane cracker in Ras Laffan through the Qatofin project.
