All the three worker unions of IPCL have decided to launch a strike at Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd’s (IPCL) Vadodara complex from March 20, to protest the mass transfer of workers from IPCL, Vadodara complex to Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) Jamnagar refinery. This strike has been called for after efforts to resolve the issue of the mass transfer of 1,200 workers failed to meet success. It is also alleged that also alleged that while the management of the company decided to transfer workers in bulk , on the other hand it also announced a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for workers at the Vadodara complex.
IPCL’s workers sought the intervention of RIL chairman, Mukesh Ambani, which resulted in the management of IPCL and worker unions arriving at an understanding to resolve the issue through discussions leading workers to defer the agitation in protest against the mass transfer. However, the management turned hostile in implementing the understanding arrived between the workers and the management, leaving the workers with no choice but to go on a strike.
The IPCL Employees Union had challenged the decision of the mass transfer of workers in the labour court, which stayed the mass transfer till March 2, 2007 and the next hearing has been scheduled for March 23. Since the Vadodara complex is an old plant which consumes more energy and has surplus manpower, will the company decide to close the complex?
