Vietnam to invest US$4.5 bln to reduce dependence on plastic imports

In 2005, Vietnam imported 1.5 billion tons of polymers. In an effort to reduce its dependence on plastic imports, the Vietnamese government will fund US$4.5 bln to develop its chemical industry by 2010. The core of the plan is three petrochemical units to increase capacities of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester and PVC. The plan for funding the implementation of investment projects has been driven by growing demand from the automotive, construction and electronics sectors, and has recently received government approval.
