A cut in permissible levels of benzene and other hydrocarbons in UK

09-Aug-05
New guidelines curbing the permissible levels of benzene and other hydrocarbons in the fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) industry have been launched by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The document sets a limit of 0.5% on the level of benzene impurities allowed in styrene and other hydrocarbon monomers used in composite manufacturing operations. The guidelines have been initiated to protect the environment from benzene emissions and will come into effect by March 2006, and will cover GRP activities likely to involve the polymerisation of over 100 tons of unsaturated hydrocarbon. These changes have been initiated to bring the UK into line with European Union regulations on the control of VOC emissions.
