In 2003-2004, BASF streamlined its polystyrene product range, reducing it from 400 types to only 10 in order to utilize the advantages of very efficiently structured production and fast logistics. One of these 10 polystyrene types, which are suitable for universal applications was the new PS 454 C with a gloss value of 88 at a melt temperature of 240°C. This grade is being offered by BASF at a lower price than its "old" glossy products. This new polystyrene grade developed by BASF meets all the specifications of PS 454 C from the previous range and has improved impact strength and an extraordinary gloss. Since the melt temperatures can be lowered, the cycle time is also shorter.
The new material that has been in the market for several months is considered to have been a success at the market during the introductory phase. The customers could also relate to the new product as it was sold under the old name.
With the new product the company has shown that streamlining a product portfolio does not mean foregoing product innovation.
