Unprecedented feedstock prices coupled with high energy and transportation costs, have pushed BASF to consider a price increase for its engineering plastics in North America. The increases for North America effective October 15, will range between $0.10-$0.15 per pound for various grades of nylon, specialty nylon, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyacetal copolymer.
Basell plans to raise its PE and PP prices effective October 1 in Europe, by almost €200/ton for polypropylene and €230/ton for polyethylene. Dow Chemicals had earlier this month announced an increase of €150/ton for Polypropylene in October contracts.
Sharp increases in crude oil and monomer prices are exerting huge pressure on margins, and these increases seem necessary as crude oil prices touch new records. However, what remains in doubt is the passing of such high prices to processors. Will they be able to absorb such large price increases?
