Bayer MaterialScience LLC is entering the North American personal care industry with its novel new line of Baycusan® polyurethane cosmetic ingredients, which is based on two technology platforms:
-- Aqueous polyurethane dispersions as multifunctional film formers and
-- Polyurethane micro spheres as functional sensory aids
Bayer's Baycusan® aqueous polymers contain no solvents or preservatives and can be used to formulate skin and hair care products with little or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Baycusan® film formers are low viscosity liquids, allowing cosmetics producers great latitude in product formulation, including cold processing. Their unique polymer design results in a fine balance between outstanding water resistance and ease of washability, film breathability and barrier properties. Baycusan® polymers form a clear flexible film with great skin substantivity and a non-tacky, soft feel.
As a film former in hair styling products, Baycusan® polymers offer remarkable hold in high humidity and a natural soft feel on hair. The novel film formers can also be formulated into clear wash-off facial masks and facial treatments. Used in decorative cosmetics, the new polyurethanes lend outstanding rub-off and water resistance to mascara, liquid foundations and eyeliner. Baycusan® powders are supplied as polyurethane micro spheres that impart a dry, velvety afterfeel on skin, as well as high oil absorption properties. As a sensory aid, they are said to create an elegant and luxurious skin care or makeup product.
