Bayer MaterialScience has successfully started production at its new 350,000 tpa diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) complex-the world's largest MDI facility-at the Bayer Integrated Site Shanghai (BISS). Furthermore, the company has started construction for a 250,000 tpa toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant at BISS which is scheduled to come on stream in 2010. MDI is a raw material used primarily for the production of polyurethane rigid foams and TDI is used in large quantities for production of flexible polyurethane foam for upholstered furniture, mattresses, and car seats.
Company's new projects underline its commitment to China, the most important market in the Asia Pacific region and currently its third largest national market worldwide. Setting standard for energy-efficiency, the new TDI facility in Shanghai features the modern Gas Phase Process which saves 60% energy, uses 80% less solvent and slash investments by 20% relative to a conventional plant of the same size. In addition, the oxygen depolarized cathode (ODC) technology used to recycle chlorine at the Bayer Integrated Site Shanghai 30% energy compared with conventional technology.
Besides, Bayer MaterialScience also plans a new world-scale plant for TDI with an 300,000 tpa capacity at its Dormagen/Uerdingen integrated site in Germany. It will replace the existing TDI plants at the Dormagen and Brunsbüttel sites. MDI production at Brunsbüttel will be expanded to a total capacity of 400,000 tpa by making use of the existing capacity of 160,000 tpa and the existing infrastructure, and by converting the present TDI plant to an MDI facility.
