Bayer MaterialScience has got the nod of approval for E700m of investments in polyurethane and polycarbonate capacity at various locations to be site from USA to China, that includes:
* Projects to expand MDI and polycarbonate resin in China
* Projects to expand chlorine production at the Baytown, Texas plant to 500,000 tpa from the current 300,000
* Refurbishing its future headquarters at Leverkusen.
Polycarbonate expansion encompasses expansion of capacity by 100,000 tpa in Caojing, near Shanghai, where an initial 100 000 tpa unit is nearing completion. The additional capacity is planned for completion by the end of 2007.
A 350,000 tpa plant for PU intermediate diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), also located at Caojing, will receive the chunk of the investment and is due on line in 2008. Both the MDI and polycarbonate projects are part of a US$1.8 bln investment at the Caojing site between now and 2009.
These two new world scale production plants will prepare the company for the future, given the continued strong increase in demand for these high quality material in the Asia Pacific region.
