The joint venture between OMV and Borealis at Schwechat, Austria, is set to become one of the largest plastics manufacturing sites in Europe. The site will comprise a new 350,000 tons Borstar polyethylene plant and will encompass the expansion of Borstar polypropylene plant and of OMV's nearby cracker from 650,000 to 900,000 tpa. This joint EUR 400 million investment will transform the OMV/Borealis Schwechat site and will strengthen and consolidate the competitive position of Schwechat as Europe's leading petrochemical centre with 900,000 tpa production by OMV and more than a million tpa for Borealis.
OMV's investment outlay of EUR 200 million is toward upgrade of its cracker, expanding ethylene capacity by 150,000 tpa to 500,000 tpa and its propylene capacity by 100,000 tpa to 400,000 tpa. These basic petrochemicals are delivered by pipeline to neighbouring Borealis plants and used in manufacturing advanced polyethylene and polypropylene plastics.
