Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Ltd will be North East India’s first Gas Cracker project, scheduled for commissioning by April 2012. The The Gas Authority of India (GAIL)-led joint venture project will be located at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh, Assam at a cost of around Rs. 5460 crore. The complex has been configured with a capacity of 220,000 tpa of ethylene and 60,000 tpa of propylene using natural gas and naphtha as feedstock. The project is the outcome of the tripartite Assam Accord signed between the Centre and the State Government and the All Assam Students Union in 1985.
Once BCPL begins commercial operations, awareness is expected to be created in the North-Eastern region and as a result, per capita consumption of polymers is expected to increase in the region.
