DSM Dyneema, inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world's strongest fiber®, has won a victory before the European Patent Office Boards of Appeal. As per a notification received by the company, it had successfully defended its patent for panels incorporating high-performance Dyneema® fiber against a challenge from Teijin Aramid (formerly Teijin Twaron), a Dutch supplier of rival fiber products. The panels made with Dyneema® are used in such applications as bullet-resistant vests and vehicle armor. According to the company, the panels, patented by DSM Dyneema provide superior anti-ballistic protection for both personnel and vehicles. The company states that Dyneema® is as much as 15% stronger than steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fiber on a weight-per-weight basis, with the added advantages of extreme durability and resistance to moisture, UV light and chemicals.
