Eastman Chemical Company recently announced that the Japan Hygienic Olefin and Styrene Plastics Association (JHOSPA), which publishes voluntary standards for certain polymeric materials and products for use as food containers, packaging materials and utensils, has amended its list of certified polymers to include the composition of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester. Tritan™, a new-generation copolyester, is used in a broad range of applications, including small appliances, infant care and housewares. According to the company,
"Through stringent testing and review, we ensure the quality and safety of our products before gaining regulatory approvals or industry standard certifications," said Deborah Baum Crain, director of copolyester innovation, Eastman Chemical Company. "We are pleased that JHOSPA has deemed Eastman Tritan™ copolyester as acceptable for use in specified food contact applications." The company says products molded with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester can be repeatedly washed without the crazing, cracking or hazing that can result from continual exposure to high heat and aggressive cleaning agents.
