DuPont’s polyethylene unit at the DuPont Sabine River Works in Orange experienced an emergency shutdown an hour before midnight on Tuesday. Design of the safety allows the material to be sent to the vent stack and into the air as the unit is shutting down. When the ethylene was sent to a venting stack, rapid decompression of the material created a very loud noise, that shook some homes, and flaring. However, no injuries were caused.
