Environmental body to re-evaluate PetroChina's Sichuan refinery

PetroChina's under construction refining and ethylene project in earthquake affected Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province is being re-evaluated by China's Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP). The Pengzhou project, planned to be the largest of its kind in southwestern China, was to have a crude processing capacity of 10 mln tons and ethylene production capacity of 800,000 tpa. tons A specialized team has been deployed by MEP to assess the earthquake's impact on the area earmarked for construction of the RMB 4 bln (US$571.43 mln) petrochemical complex. All testing, analysis and conclusions will be directed by the MEP. Any changes in facility size and production volume will be defined after the re-evaluation. Simultaneously, PetroChina has also arranged a special team to investigate the impact of the earthquake. If the earthquake has caused irreparable damages, PetroChina plans to abandon the project.
