Flaring warning indicates preparedness of Wilton Cracker to come back online

18-Nov-08
A flaring warning has been issued indicating the preparedness of the Wilton Cracker to come back online. At least 48 hours worth of flaring was expected from today as SABIC brings its Olefins 6 Cracker plant back online after an unscheduled 2 month, £35 mln overhaul. The Cracker complex manufactures ethylene, propylene, butadiene and other gasoline by-products. The company stresses that flaring is an integral part of the Cracker complex's safety systems and is necessary in order to both shut the plant down and bring it back on stream in a safe, controlled way. Recognising that flaring is noisy, particularly due to steam being injected into the flames at high pressure to make it burn cleanly, the company has apologised in advance.
