As margins have been under exceptional pressure for this FY, HPL is serious about expanding its product basket. As a result, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) is mulling a broad technological consulting agreement with LyondellBasell, as per Calcutta Telegraph. Currently, products manufactured by HPL include: high-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, benzene and butadiene. However, the existing range does not include all the grades. One of the reasons for Haldia’s poor financial performance is lack of flexibility to produce products that can give it a higher margin. The agreement with LyondellBasell is expected to cover this shortcoming, as LyondellBasell has access to many of the grades that HPL does not possess. Under the broad agreement, LyondellBasell will pass on the process and catalysts to manufacture new grades, if and when HPL asks for it, for a fee.
